Why Tradies Are Recession-Proof (And What Online Entrepreneurs Can Learn)

Last week I paid $365 for a tradie to stick some plastic over a hole in my skylight. With my plastic. And my ladder.

Before you think I’m having a go at tradies, let me be clear – I’m actually envious.

The Tradie Advantage

Think about it. Three roofers said they’d quote. Only one showed up. He forgot his ladder for a roofing job, used my materials, spent maybe 20 minutes on site, and charged $365.

And I paid it. Because I needed the problem solved.

That’s market power. Real, tangible market power that can’t be outsourced, automated, or replaced by someone in Bangladesh working for $3 an hour.

What AI Can’t Replace

I keep telling my grandchildren to become tradies, and here’s why – AI bots won’t be climbing onto roofs anytime soon. Plumbing emergencies need human hands. Electrical work requires someone who can actually be held accountable if the house burns down.

Whilst I’m sitting here competing with every other online marketer on the planet, tradies operate in protected local markets with genuine barriers to entry.

The Online Business Parallel

But here’s what’s interesting for those of us building online income streams. The same principles that make tradies recession-proof can work for us too:

Scarcity creates value. My roofer had scarcity because he was one of only three willing to quote, and the only one who actually showed up. In online business, we create scarcity through specialisation. Don’t be another generic “make money online” guru. Be the person who teaches 55-year-old accountants how to build micro-niche websites about tax law changes.

Local beats global sometimes. Tradies succeed because they serve local markets. Online, this means serving specific communities rather than trying to appeal to everyone. A Facebook group for Melbourne retirees starting online businesses will always outperform a generic “entrepreneur” group.

Problems need solutions right now. My roof was leaking. I needed it fixed immediately. Online, this means solving urgent problems rather than nice-to-have wishes. Teaching someone how to replace lost superannuation income is more urgent than teaching them how to get rich slowly.

Show up when others don’t. Two-thirds of my roofers didn’t even bother quoting. In online business, consistency is your ladder. Whilst others post sporadically or give up after six months, you keep showing up. Publishing weekly. Building slowly. Compound activity beats sporadic brilliance every time.

The AI Integration Opportunity

Smart people won’t lose their jobs to AI – they’ll use AI to make more money. The roofer who uses AI to write better quotes, manage scheduling, and follow up with customers will dominate the one who doesn’t.

Same applies online. The content creator who uses AI to research topics, draft outlines, and optimise copy will outproduce the purist who insists on doing everything manually.

Your Protected Market

Tradies have geography and licensing as protection. Online entrepreneurs need to create their own moats:

Deep expertise. Know your niche better than anyone else. Not surface-level knowledge – deep, practical expertise that takes time to develop.

Relationships. Build genuine connections with your audience. AI can write content, but it can’t replace the trust that comes from years of consistent, helpful communication.

Systems and processes. Develop workflows and methods that work. Document them. Refine them. Your systematic approach becomes your competitive advantage.

Brand recognition. In a local town, everyone knows the reliable electrician. Online, you want to be the person people think of when they have a specific problem.

The Long Game

My $365 roof repair taught me something important. The tradie didn’t need fancy marketing, a personal brand, or viral content. He just needed to solve problems reliably.

That’s the model worth copying. Build multiple small assets that solve real problems. Show up consistently. Don’t quit when others do. Let compound activity work in your favour.

The tradies are onto something. They’ve figured out how to charge premium prices for essential services in protected markets.

The question is: how can you create the same dynamic in your online business?
