When the Hill You’re Avoiding Is the Only Business Growth Strategy That Actually Works

Most people looking for a business growth strategy are searching in the wrong direction. They read more articles, watch more tutorials, compare more tools. But the thing stopping them from growing is never a lack of information.

It is a hill they have not climbed yet.

Let me explain what I mean.

I was out on the bike recently when I had to brake hard coming down a steep section at around 45 kilometres an hour. There was another rider coming up toward me, wobbly, drifting across the track, clearly working hard just to keep moving. We passed each other safely, but the moment stayed with me.

Because that rider was me, a few years ago.

I used to dismount on the tough climbs and walk. I told myself walking was still exercise, which is technically true, but it was also a way of making peace with not finishing. The hill beat me and I found a reason why that was okay.

What changed things was not finding a better cycling podcast or reading a guide to climbing technique. I just rode at the same hills, day after day, a bit further each time. Until one day I did not have to get off.

And this is the business growth strategy nobody writes about, because it does not look like a strategy at all.

Find the hill that is stopping you and ride at it every day.

For most people building an online business, that hill is not the same hill. For some it is getting traffic. For others it is converting visitors into buyers. For some it is the technology, or the offer, or simply the belief that it can work for someone their age, in their circumstances, with their starting point.

But there is always one hill. The one you keep walking around or dismounting before the top.

The thing about a real business growth strategy is that it has to be specific to the blockage in front of you right now. Generic tactics do not move a stuck business forward, because they are not aimed at your stuck point. They give you something to do that feels like progress without requiring you to ride at the actual hard thing.

When I look back at the periods in my own online business where nothing seemed to be moving, it was always because I was staying comfortable. Doing the easy tasks. Reading. Planning. Preparing to be ready to start soon.

The hill does not care about your preparation. You climb it by climbing it.

If your business is not growing the way you want it to, the most useful question you can ask is not what strategy should I try next. It is what am I avoiding, and why.

Because once you identify the specific blockage, you can start riding at it instead of around it.

I put together something to help with exactly this. If you want to find and clear the blockages that are preventing your sales, this is where to start:
