I found the pot of gold

When you are standing in the rain with the sun low behind you, something extraordinary is happening. Most people look up at a rainbow and see a beautiful arc. But what they are actually seeing is just a slice of something much bigger, and once you understand the science behind it, you will never look at a rainbow the same way again.

I discovered this myself one afternoon driving home from Millicent. The sun was low on the horizon, not quite dusk, when a light shower began. I glanced up and noticed the rainbow forming around me, not in front of me in the way I had always imagined. It took a moment for my brain to catch up with what I was actually seeing.

Here is the thing most people do not know. A rainbow is not an arc. It is a full circle.

From the air, pilots and passengers in aircraft sometimes see complete circular rainbows beneath them, glowing rings in the landscape below. On the ground, we only ever see the top half because the earth gets in the way of the lower half. But the circle is always there, complete and unbroken.

The science of rainbow perspective comes down to geometry and the position of three things: you, the sun, and the rain. A rainbow forms at a specific angle of about 42 degrees from the antisolar point, which is the point directly opposite the sun from your eyes. That antisolar point is always centred on your own shadow. Because the angle is fixed and the centre is always your shadow, the circle of a rainbow is always centred on you.

Change your position and the rainbow shifts with you. Walk toward where the rainbow appears to touch the ground and it moves away at exactly the same pace. This is why you can never physically reach the end of a rainbow. The end is not a fixed point in space. It is a point defined by where you are standing.

This is also why two people standing next to each other are technically seeing different rainbows. Each person is at the centre of their own circle, with their own antisolar point, at their own 42-degree angle. The rainbows overlap and look identical from a distance, but they are geometrically distinct optical experiences.

So when the old folk tale says there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the science actually backs it up in the most unexpected way. The end of the rainbow is always where you are. You are the pot of gold.

I genuinely got goosebumps sitting in the car when this landed for me. It is one of those moments where a simple piece of physics rearranges something in your thinking. You see something familiar almost every day of your life, and then one afternoon it suddenly reveals what it has always been.

If you want to see a full-circle rainbow for yourself, you have a couple of options. Aircraft passengers sometimes catch them, and they are stunning. Garden hose rainbows can form full circles if you position yourself correctly with the sun behind you and mist in front. The rainbow perspective science also explains why rainbows appear to move. Since the circle is centred on your antisolar point, any time you move your head, look from a different angle, or shift your position, the rainbow shifts with you. It is not moving. You are. The rainbow is simply reflecting back your own point of view.

There is something quietly profound about that. The universe has set things up so that every rainbow you see is yours alone, built around your exact position, at your exact angle, in that exact moment.
