sinkhole

It feels like it’s drawing you in

When online business fear and resistance hit hardest, nobody warns you about the voice

If you have ever stood right on the edge of a decision in online business, you already know the feeling I am about to describe.

There is a place near Mt Gambier in South Australia called Hell’s Hole. It is a sinkhole in limestone country, about 45 metres across, with the water surface sitting roughly 38 metres below the viewing platform. When you stand on the edge of it alone, something strange happens. The place pulls at you. Not physically, but in your head. There is a voice that says, quietly and clearly, “Go on, just jump.”

I went looking for it once, for fun. And that feeling stopped me cold.

Because the sides are too steep to climb back out.

Online business has exactly the same voice.

Every new product launch whispers it. Every bold sales page, every countdown timer, every testimonial from someone who made ten thousand dollars in their first week is that voice, leaning over the edge with you, saying go on. And plenty of people jump. Some find their feet quickly enough. But a lot of us spend years scrambling at those steep sides wondering how we got so far down so fast.

This is the part nobody talks about when they discuss online business fear and resistance. The fear is not always about starting. Sometimes the more dangerous thing is the resistance you feel toward stopping. Toward saying no to a launch. Toward holding your ground when the voice gets loud.

The pattern tends to go like this. You find online business because you want something different. Maybe you are over fifty and looking for an income that does not depend on turning up somewhere five days a week. Maybe you want flexibility, or a way to build something that compounds over time rather than trading every hour for a wage. That desire is completely valid. But the moment you step into this world, you are surrounded by launches, and each one has been crafted specifically to trigger that “go on, just jump” feeling.

So you jump. And the sinkhole closes over you.

The resistance I am describing is not the resistance that holds you back from building something real. It is the resistance that shows up after the jump, when you are looking for handholds in the dark and finding mostly smooth stone. That is where years can disappear. Not for lack of effort, but because no one handed you the rules before you stepped off the edge.

So what actually helps when you are caught between fear of missing out and the very real risk of getting trapped in the wrong thing?

First, recognise the voice for what it is. When something whispers “go on, just jump,” that is not a sign of opportunity. It is a sign that skilled marketing is working exactly as intended. Urgency, scarcity, and social proof are the three ingredients that manufacture that pull. When you feel it, slow down rather than speeding up. The genuine opportunities in online business do not evaporate in 48 hours.

Second, understand that online business fear and resistance are not the same emotion even though they feel similar in the body. Fear of starting is often protective. It is worth sitting with and examining. But resistance to quitting a bad path, or resistance to chasing a shiny object, is something worth cultivating on purpose. The people who build sustainable income online are not fearless. They are selective about what they commit to.

Third, have your rules in place before the next launch arrives. This is the part that most people skip because they think they will just make a good decision in the moment. But in the moment, you are standing at the edge of Hell’s Hole with the voice going full volume. That is not the time to be working out your criteria from scratch.

The 8 rules to build your business:

The idea behind Profit Wormhole is a good one. A wormhole is the opposite of a sinkhole. Both involve going somewhere fast. But one drops you into a hole with no way out, and the other gets you somewhere useful faster than the long way round. Having your rules sorted before the voice starts talking is how you tell the difference between the two.

Online business built slowly and deliberately compounds. That is the whole game. Activity stacks on activity, small assets build into larger ones, and the income starts to look like something you can depend on. But none of that works if you keep jumping into sinkholes every six months and spending the intervening time trying to climb back out.

The fear is normal. The resistance is useful if you point it in the right direction. And the voice will keep talking, because that is what it does. The question is whether you have already decided what you are going to do when you hear it.
