When your sales do not match your expectations, most people go looking for a new method. A new course, a new tool, a new launch to follow. The information keeps piling up and the results stay flat.
That is the wrong diagnosis. And it costs people years.
I have watched this play out over and over in online business, including in my own journey. The problem is almost never a shortage of information. We have never had more of it. Courses, YouTube tutorials, AI tools, Facebook groups with tens of thousands of members, a new product launch hitting your inbox every single day.
The problem is not knowing which bits actually matter.
That is where the fundamentals of online business become so important, and so consistently underrated.
Most people skip over the basics because they do not feel exciting. Basics sound like beginner stuff. But the truth works the other way around. When something is not working, when sales are slow or traffic is not converting, it is almost always because one of the fundamentals has been skipped, rushed, or misunderstood. Not because you need a new strategy.
Think about what the actual fundamentals look like in practice. Things like knowing exactly what outcome your customer wants before you build anything. Working backwards from that outcome when you design your offer. And then, perhaps most overlooked of all, actually asking for the sale. Not hinting at it. Not burying the link at the bottom. Asking directly.
None of that is new. That is precisely the point.
Tony Shepherd, a marketer I respect a great deal, reckons he spent about four years spinning his wheels before he got clear on his own version of these principles. He eventually wrote them down as eight rules. Two of them I have already mentioned here. There are five more that fill in the gaps most people never think to address.
What struck me when I first read through them was how obvious they seemed in hindsight. That is usually how it goes with fundamentals. You do not appreciate them until you can see clearly what was missing.
If your results online are not where you want them to be, it is worth asking whether you have actually got the basics locked in, or whether you have just been layering new tactics on top of a shaky foundation.
The resource below is worth looking at if you want to work through that question properly.
It is not what you do not know that hurts, it is what you know for sure that is not correct:
