degraded AI

AI tools are getting worse, faster.

When you pump a river full of sewage, the fish downstream start to suffer. That is more or less what is happening to AI right now, and if you use these tools to build your online business, you need to understand why.

This is not a scare piece. I use AI tools regularly, and I think they can be genuinely useful. But there is a specific problem building underneath the surface of every major AI platform, and it has a name: AI content quality degradation. Once you understand what is actually happening, you will use these tools very differently.

So let me explain it plainly.

Almost every AI language model learns by training on text scraped from the internet. The more text it sees, the better it gets at predicting what good writing looks like. That worked brilliantly in the early days, because the internet was full of articles, books, forum posts, and real human conversation accumulated over decades.

But here is where it starts to unravel.

Since late 2022, the internet has been flooded with AI-generated content. Blog posts, product descriptions, training courses, email sequences, social media updates, YouTube scripts. Enormous volumes of it. And the quality of a large proportion of it is, frankly, poor. Vague, repetitive, padded-out, generic.

Now those same AI tools are training on that content.

Think about what that means. When a model learns from output that was itself produced by a slightly earlier, slightly weaker version of a model, the errors compound. The vagueness multiplies. The genericness deepens. Researchers have a term for this process: model collapse. It is what happens when AI trains on AI, generation after generation, because each round dilutes the signal and amplifies the noise.

I have already started seeing the result in my own work. Outputs that would have impressed me twelve months ago now feel flat. The tendency to pad sentences, to use abstract language where specific language should be, to produce five paragraphs when one clear sentence would do. These habits are getting worse, not better, in certain tools.

This does not mean AI tools are useless. It means the gap between a good prompt and a bad one is widening fast.

If you give a degraded model a lazy prompt, you will get lazy output. Recycled phrasing, hollow structure, ideas that sound plausible but carry no real weight. The kind of content that fills up a page without actually saying anything.

But if you give that same model a well-constructed prompt, one that is specific about your audience, your voice, your goal, and the context you are working in, you can still pull genuinely useful output from it.

The tool has not changed. Your approach to it has to.

There is a useful analogy here. A cheap kitchen knife in skilled hands will outperform an expensive one in the hands of someone who does not know how to hold it. The knife matters a lot less than most people think. What matters is knowing what you are doing with it.

The same principle applies to AI tools right now. You do not need to subscribe to six different platforms. You do not need the most expensive model on the market. What you do need is a reliable, repeatable way to build prompts that give the model the context it needs to produce something worth using.

I built a PDF guide specifically for this reason. It walks you through how to create your own prompt assistant, one that already understands your niche and writes in your voice, so you are not starting from a blank page every single time you sit down to work.

If you are building an online business and you are using AI tools to help you, this is probably the most practical thing you can do right now to protect the quality of what you produce.

AI content quality degradation is a real and worsening problem. But it is not one you have to be a victim of. The people who learn to prompt well will keep getting good results. The people who do not will keep wondering why their AI output feels thinner and thinner every month.
