All of you have probably heard or read about the terrible start to Summer we have had here in Australia with the enormous bushfires in most states that have destroyed 15 million acres (60.7 thousand square kilometres).

That's about 1/2 of England, the same as West Virginia.

The loss of life isn't fully known yet, but there are confirmed 22 dead and another 28 missing.

2,500+ building destroyed and a massive loss of animals bit domestic and native.

Some are still not fully out yet but are under control.

 However, there was one fire on October 8, 1871, that did far more damage to property and had a far greater loss of life, but very few people even remember it because it was the same day as the Great Chicago Fire.

In Peshtigo, Washington a fire broke out that destroyed the towns of Holland and Manistee in Michigan and Port Huron on Lake Huron.

There were 1,875 square miles (1.2 million acres) of forest destroyed, 12 communities and 1,200 - 2,500 people killed.

Even leaping into the Peshtigo River didn't prove to be a safe haven from the fires, some people drowned, and others succumbed to hypothermia in the freezing water.

That is still the most significant loss of life in a single fire in USA history.

No doubt there will be other fires in the future just as there has been in the past.

We need to get better at managing them and protecting people and property.

And we will, that's what people do.

The other thing people do is figure out ways to protect themselves for disasters.

Currently, the best way to protect yourself from financial disaster is to create a stream of income you can rely on without having to spend a lot of time working on it.
