Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. But once that first sentence is out, the rest usually follows without too much difficulty. Even if you're not a natural writer like Hemingway or Wilde, there are some things you can do to make the process smoother. Inspired by a post from fellow blogger Will Critchlow, here are a few suggestions: This method is the most critical tool, and it's simple: Put your laptop in front of you and start writing. Don't spend time organizing or moving things around or worrying about how to get started. Just open the file and start typing; you'll see where it goes. Be less like Hemingway and more like Kerouac here. This one is for Hemingway. Writing in short bursts with lots of breaks is a tried-and-true way to build up creative momentum. You can use the Pomodoro method if you like. It works well. One trick I use is to let myself get sidetracked by an interesting Wikipedia article. If it's long, I'll read some of it and then come back to my writing later. If it's short, I'll just read the whole thing first and then jump back to my writing when I hit return at the end of the last paragraph. This one is more of a general technique, but it has a significant impact on writing: Think in terms of topics instead of sentences. When I'm stuck on a paragraph, I try to figure out what topic it's supposed to be covering and then write down the first thing that comes to mind. Once that's out there, it becomes easier to get the next part down. Writing is much like everything else you do in life. Some action is better than no action. You can correct movement in the wrong direction, but the only way to fix inertia is movement in any direction. Regards, Brent. P.S. I did some slight edits to the above email, but over 90% of it was written using an A.I. tool that I have been introduced to. I started with the subject line and the first four words. I then added the last two lines before the signoff. Obviously, I also added this P.S. ;-) I need to play with this a little more. Damnit, that means I need a subscription. This one is the best A.I. writing tool I have seen so far, I'm sure they'll be getting better, but this is pretty good. By the time you read this, I'll be in Melbourne and hopefully had my first cuddle with the newbie. To celebrate, I'm going to give anyone who wants to get the 10 Micro-Models document a 50% discount.
