There are many books, videos and expensive seminars you can attend that all claim to teach you how to achieve the goals you set, but there is one way that none of them teaches, as far as I know.

This is a method that I learned from a Psychology book that I used to quit smoking 30+ years ago.

It has worked so well that I can be in the company of people who are smoking, and it doesn't bother me at all.

You won't get that from other people who have quit.

They still crave a cigarette and get quite cranky when there are smokers around them.

The other thing about this method is that it is very fast.

I quit over two days and never went back.

This is how I did it.

I became a non-smoker rather than an ex-smoker.

I changed my perception of myself to be a non-smoker and coached my automatic responses to being offered a cigarette from "Thanks" to "No thanks, I don't smoke".

Why did I go down this path?

Giving up was easy, I'd done it many times before, but I still saw myself as a smoker, and it was just as easy to take it up again.

Non-smokers, on the other hand, have never smoked and are unlikely to take up the habit.

There were a couple of other things I did to help break the habit of picking up a pack, but changing my perception of myself was the key to eliminating the desire to smoke.

What does this mean for you and reaching your goals?

You need to change your perception of yourself to be the type of person who achieves goals.

When you think about it, you need to work out what type of person gets to where you want to be.

For example, you want to be a writer - what sort of person is a writer?

You want to be an athlete - what sort of person is an athlete?

You want to be successful in business - what sort of person is successful in business?

Pick the best characteristics of those people and develop them as your own.

Whenever you face a decision, ask yourself, "What would (the type of person I want to be) would do?"

When you are trying to be healthier, you would ask, "what would a healthy person do?"

Or when trying to be a successful business person, you would ask, "what would a business person do?"

Does that make sense?
