"I don't know the key to success but I do know that the key to failure is trying to please everybody." - Bill Cosby.

In a nutshell.

Sometimes I wish I could be as concise in my ideas like that but I'm not, usually.

With bricks and mortar businesses that idea can be seen in so many areas.

Most of our big department store chains are trying to be all things to all people and, as you may be aware, they are struggling to survive at the moment.

That's not quite true though is it!

They do mostly specialise broadly.

They might have a floor for men's clothing and another for women's clothing.

There is another for kitchenware, a spot for electronic equipment and of course floors for kids clothing and another for toys.

But you probably won't see cars, boats etc. in their stores.

They may be broad-based businesses but even they 'specialise' a bit.

Other stores are much more niche.

Sporting goods in general and then sub-niche of that in running shoes.

For each floor in the department store, they'll have a competitor who specializes in part or all of that floor's goods.

The sub-niches seem to do better, they get better prices for their goods and make more profit per customer than their bigger competitors.

It's the same in Internet Marketing.

Start in the big markets, niche down until you find your sweet spot and work it hard.

You need to make sure that there enough people buying stuff in that sub-niche for you to make a profit but other than that you're good to go.

What are the big markets?

Everybody wants to get paid, laid and live forever.

So they're your big niches.

Money, relationships and health.

Google currently have some sort of vendetta against those in the money and health markets.

They call them the 'money or your life' markets and they want any website targeting those to be written by experts in their fields who can show verifiable qualifications.

That doesn't stop you working in those areas though, you'll just have to get your traffic from sources other than the Google SERPs.

But then most of us don't get much traffic from that source anyway so I don't see that as a big deal.

What do you think about that?

What are your favourite traffic sources?

Regards,

Brent.

P.S.  There's one traffic source you can set up with almost no effort and will supply traffic for you for free for a long time.

I must be feeling generous this week, this one is also free.

Go have a look.
