One of the biggest problems with Facebook is that their algorithm is designed to keep you on their site.

It does this by showing you more of what you have liked, commented on, shared or written.

Because of this, you will not get exposed to alternative views, more moderate ideas or even opposing ideas.

Why is this a bad thing?

We, humans, are susceptible to confirmation bias.

This bias is where we ignore or downplay any information that doesn't fit our worldview.

But suppose we never get the chance to explore alternative views and only get more information that matches our existing bias. 

In that case, it gets reinforced to the extent that we become more and more convinced that we are right and everybody else is wrong.

Of course, those people who hold a different view are also exposed to more and more information matching their bias which confirms, to them, that they are right.

If your views are left-leaning, you'll get pushed further and further to the left.

If your views are right-leaning, you'll get pushed further and further to the right.

Anyone attempting to moderate the discussions in either group will be attacked and howled down, so they reasonably quickly get out of the way.

The moderate people shut up for their safety, and the radical right and radical left keep pumping themselves up to a fever pitch.

This polarising is not the way to have balanced discourse and a stable society.

Facebook knows this, they have known about it for years, but they have no idea how to stop it other than closing down the software that makes them billions.

Mark is too greedy to do that, and the government is in no hurry to enforce anything.

Especially while Facebook is shutting down their opposition for them.

Try posting anything on Facebook that takes a counter position on Covid-19, mask-wearing, the vaccines or shutdowns, and see how long the post remains online.

Then post something you make up that supports any of those positions, and see how long that stays up.
