In 1976 I was driving from Adelaide to Darwin to take up a new position there. I was driving a Datsun 1600 and towing a small trailer because I was moving house. It was an exciting trip due to the time of year, it was the wet season, and we had to divert around or drive through multiple flooded areas. At one stop, I found a man's black opal ring on the side of the highway. I have had a bit of experience with black opals and recognised it as worth at least $20k because of its size, colour and the fact that it was a complete stone, not a doublet or triplet. As you can imagine, that amount of money in 1976 was massive. It was more than double my annual income. Carefully wrapping it in tissue, I stored it carefully in the back seat and travelled on. About 24 hours later, I lost it. I drove through water so deep that it was up to my waist inside the car. I didn't realise it until much later, but when I opened the doors to let the water out, the tissue must have flowed out with it, and the ring was gone. I hope someone found it, and the money did them a lot of good. Do you have any stories of loss that you'd like to share? Regards,
