Some people think that they must get all the basics of Internet marketing under their belt before they start.

Wrong.

So very wrong.

For a start, no-one knows everything there is to know about Internet marketing.

Secondly, it's a dynamic field so you cannot get it all under your belt before you start.

It keeps changing.

What worked yesterday probably won't work the same today.

The only thing that keeps you on track and growing is testing.

Test everything.

I've been testing one of 'truths' of email marketing and discovered something exciting.

Most email marketing 'experts' will tell you that you should cull your email list regularly.

What they mean by that is that you should remove anyone who hasn't opened an email in the last 30/60/90 days to clean your list of people who are not interested in your emails.

I queried that because I didn't open an email from one marketer for over a year who I now open all their emails.

Imagine if they had cleaned their email list?

I've bought almost everything they sell. 😮

Back to the testing.

I split the list into two groups, those who have opened an email and those who haven't.

I did this six months ago and sent the same email to both groups every day.

Every day people in the unopens group open an email.

I migrate them into the opens group regularly to keep the unopens as the unopens.

But every day more of you open the emails, thank you. 😁

The point about this is that you have to test everything, not just take statements at face value, not even mine.

What works for me may not work for you, and vice versa.

But, the big takeaway here is that by testing everything you will find what works for you and your audience.

If you don't take action and don't test, you'll never know if you can make a living online or not.

Brent.

P.S.  Other than simple tests such as email opens and CTR from your emails you'll need a tracking tool of some sort to help you out.

You can use Google analytics, although I find that too slow with their reporting, and I don't trust Google to tell me the truth.

You can use one of the many free link-shortening tools available such as bit.ly or the pretty links plugin, but they only give limited tracking information.

The one I use for almost everything is ClickMagick because it is capable of tracking any click through an entire funnel even if you don't own the funnel, which is brilliant for affiliate marketers.

If you do paid advertising, you can also track the type of click so when they tell you that you'll get 100 clicks from T1 countries you can cross-check that and dispute it with data if they sold you clicks from countries other than T1 or even if they were all bot clicks.

There is so much more that ClickMagick can do that if you do want excellent and actionable tracking reports you should check out their guide here
