That’s Blank Page Syndrome. Those of you who write content have probably had this at some stage. It’s what you get when you open your word processor and can’t think of what to write. It doesn’t happen to me very often. When it does, it doesn’t last long either. But that isn’t the case for everyone. Some people, not you of course, struggle for hours to write. They have ideas, false starts, delete it all and start again. Why does this happen? No-one knows for sure but I suspect that it’s similar to people stuttering. Stuttering seems to be connected to people listening to themselves and correcting their speech. BPS seems to be connected to people second-guessing themselves over what they write. The best way to overcome this is to write fearlessly. How do you do that? Just start writing. Take no notice of what you write at first. Just write anything that comes to mind. What this does is start the writing juices flowing and then the ideas also start. Something you write when you are just banging away will trigger the real start to the content. This is similar to what Steinbeck did while writing The Grapes of Wrath. Every morning he would write a letter to a friend describing what he wrote the day before and general chat. This exercise helped clear his head and got him started on that days writing. It will work for you as well. Try it next time you get BPS. Regards, Brent. P.S. sometimes you might need a little more help an there are techniques in this that will help you create content of any sort, not just books. After all, a report is just a chapter or a summary of a book. Want to find out if you can do this? |
