I grew up in a country town with around 2,000 humans and probably 4,000 dogs and cats. My father also grew up in that town, and my mother was a teacher, so we were well known as a family. You can't hide when everybody knows who you are. Other people regularly reported my misdemeanours to my parents, but I still got away with a lot of stuff. One of the main advantages of growing up in a country town is that you have a lot of freedom. After school, we had a simple rule, you could go anywhere as long as you could hear the whistle Mum used to call us home for the evening meal. Depending on which way the wind was blowing, that gave us about a mile radius from home. On weekends it was even more relaxed. We could be gone for the whole day with no one being worried about where we were or what we were doing. I had cousins who lived in Adelaide, which was a small city by world standards, but they didn't have anywhere near the freedom we enjoyed. They loved coming to stay with us. We learned to be independent, be resilient, create our own entertainment, resolve our own arguments, solve problems, fix things that broke, and cope with mistakes and misfortune. We could negotiate who would do what and when, who would be accountable, who would be in charge, who would go home because they were pissed off, and how we would bandage the injuries. Some of our city cousins still haven't learned those life lessons. By taking chances and learning from mistakes, we can all become better people. Regards,
