While there are still kids who work in all sorts of industries, most of them, at least in the first world countries, are only working in family-run enterprises.
But this is a relatively modern innovation.
You have all heard about kids working in factories, as chimney sweeps, serving in the military, and many other unsavoury jobs.
But do you know when that changed and why?
It turns out that kids were booted out of the workplace to make room for unemployed men as part of the efforts to deal with the Great Depression. They figured if kids were banned from the workplace, someone else would have to take up the work. Unions had a part in this as did the governments of the day who passed laws to compel the paying of higher wages.
All of this happened, and by 1938 children were finally allowed to be children for the first time in history. 🎉 Who would have thought that banning these kids from the workplace would have a positive effect on the quality of their lives?
It wasn't done for their benefit, but it resulted in an advantage.
That advantage has seen the growth in many industries,
Because the kids, newly freed from work, were able to get an education. That education has resulted in the world we know today.
One part of that world is the Internet. 💻 A considerable part of the Internet is that many more people can make a good living from home.
