One of the biggest mistakes new marketers, on and offline, make is to come up with a 'brilliant idea' and spend lots of time creating it long before they figure out who will buy it.

If there was a single way to almost guarantee failure, this is it.

Occasionally this does work.

Then the media jump all over it and praise the creator and call them 'genius'.

B.S.

This is better known as unbelievable luck.

But how do you make sure that your 'brilliant idea' will be successful?

Unless you are just modifying an existing successful product, then you don't start with the idea.

You start with a group of people who have a problem.

A problem that you can solve better than others have.

Why will you solve it better?

You will understand their problem.

You'll learn what they want, not what they seem to want.

When you spend time in their groups, listening and talking with them, you'll know what to supply.

There is an old marketing saying that people don't want a drill; they want a hole in the wall.

But that doesn't go far enough.

It may be that they want to hang a picture or they want to add a light fitting.

There may be a better solution to hanging the picture or installing the light fitting.

If you offer that better solution they probably won't buy the drill, they'll buy your product instead.

Isn't it easier to sell something to someone who is looking for that solution than it is to have a product and then go looking for the customer?

Find the customer first, then find out what they need, then create it and offer it to them.
