Sometimes this lie is repeated out of ignorance, but other times it is deliberate. 🤥

This lie will hold your marketing back and make it seem much harder than it needs to be.

The lie is that Google will penalise you for duplicate content. 👮‍♀️

That is not true; there are many sites which have duplicate content on them.

If you have a WordPress blog, there is duplicate content on that by default.

Almost all of them have unless the owner has made significant changes to the way the content is presented.

When you post on your WordPress site and set categories and or tags, you have created duplicate content.

That same post can be found in the contents section and each of the tags all with different paths.

That is the definition of duplicate content, the exact post in multiple places on the same site.

Google is smart enough to know that these are standard links to your post and doesn't penalise you for that; they only rank one of those links and ignore the rest.

You will get a ranking demotion if you post the same article in the posts section multiple times, that's considered a deliberate attempt to manipulate the SERPs.

If you post the same article to multiple websites, there is no penalty and no ranking demotion.

Google will choose one of those sites as the originator of the post and rank that one unless a more powerful competitor duplicates your post on their website.

In that case, they'll be likely to rank higher than you for your article.

It's a myth or a lie depending on who is telling it, but duplicate content is not a problem you need to be concerned about.

P.S. I spent several hours today rewriting an original article that I'm going to run through a spinning tool.

I wouldn't usually spend a lot of time on this exercise, but it is time well spent.

I plan to use this document to create a lot of posts as part of some testing I'm doing to build a massive Public Content Network.

This exercise is a proof of concept I have been thinking about and planning for quite a while now.

I'll share the results with you when I have something to share.

In the meantime, this is the spinning tool I'm using.

It is the best one available, still not infallible, but it is pretty good and better than most.
