Success in their chosen sport is often determined more by their birthdate than their natural skill and talent for any athlete. That's not what they'll tell you when you interview them, but it is true. It's more pronounced in their younger and more formative years, but by the time the birthdate difference has evened out, it's too late for those born at the wrong time. The reason for this is that the cut-off date for most age-level sports is January 1st. Those born in the first quarter of the year are physically bigger and stronger than those born later in the year, so they stand out more on the field and get more coaching because they are "more talented". The other significant lucky break having a considerable impact on their future success in their chosen sport is where they were born and raised. If a highly talented child is born in a rural or impoverished area, their chances of success in anything is also massively limited. This is simply because they do not have access to high-level coaching to enhance their skill or talent, nor do they have access to the level of competition that can push them to perform better. Is luck also significant in other activities? Yes, it is, but as expected, it's difficult to get those who have achieved success to admit that they were lucky. They would tell you that their success came from their hard work and persistence and that those who are not as successful are probably less talented or didn't work as hard. Without a bit of luck, it won't matter how hard you work or how good your ideas are success at your desired level is likely to elude you still. Some will tell you that 'the harder I work, the luckier I get', and that is just another level of B.S. Understand this. I'm not saying that you only need to be lucky to be successful because that's not true at all. You will still need to do all the right things in the proper order and probably work reasonably hard to reach your goals. What I am saying is that you will also need a bit of luck. We all do.
