The reason I ask is that both types of activity are possible and both work to bring in income.

The main difference is that short-cuts are not always repeatable and seldom sustainable while a reliable business can grow from small beginnings to whatever size you want.
Short-cuts are a great way to get started and get some cash in while you are building a more reliable income.
For both, you will need an email list that you can send promotional emails to as well as informational emails.
Often the short-cut approach means you'll have multiple email lists in many different niches which usually means you need an autoresponder series for each list and the occasional broadcast email for special events or products.
The email list for the more reliable business is much easier to handle.
You can have an autoresponder series as an 'onboarding' process to introduce your business, you and what they can expect.
Then you send a regular newsletter type broadcast email to the whole list with special offers only to the buyers' list.
There is no need to have a website for either of these methods, it can be useful, but it isn't a requirement.
You can build your landing pages in your autoresponder.
You can create sales pages almost anywhere and collect payment via a plethora of processors.
You can do all your business via free sites and email if you wish, there is a risk that the free site will shut down or change their rules, but when you have good backups of your material it's easy to migrate to a different free site.
This isn't hard to do, doesn't require any technical skill, and can be almost cost-free.
The autoresponder will probably cost you a few bucks a month, but most of them have a free trial period so you can test them out.

Brent.
P.S. Everybody knows that you always do better when you get trained to do any job.
Internet marketing is no exception; going it alone will make sure you take a lot longer to get to where you want to be unless you get lucky.
Regardless of what you do online, you must collect email addresses which means you need a landing page of some sort to catch the traffic before you send it on to the target page.
Landing pages are simple to build.
Your autoresponder probably has a few templates you can play with and customise to suit yourself.
Now you need to send some traffic to that landing page.
This is an excellent place to generate leads.
