It doesn't matter what you say, sometimes the person you are talking to misses the point.

"I know that you think you understood what I said but did you realise that what I said isn't what I meant?"

I'm sure you have had this happen to you before.

What causes this miscommunication?

I read somewhere, too long ago to recall the circumstances, that we think too fast.

What happens is that there is a disconnect between what we say and what they hear because they are already evaluating what you are saying through their own biases and prejudices before you have finished talking.

This happens because they are bored, irritated, angry, sad, thirsty, hungry, horny, sleepy or all of these.

It's the same with written communication.

You may be in a hurry, and I write a long email that you just don't have time to read, so you don't open it at all and never get back to it.

That's a shame. You may well be missing out on something that is in your best interests.
